On a stormy night, Meg could not fall asleep—and neither could her little brother, Charles Wallace. While they were sitting in the kitchen with their mother in the middle of the night, they were unexpectedly visited by a strange woman named Mrs. Whatsit. In the course of their conversation, she casually mentions the term "tesseract" (a five-dimensional concept), which nearly causes their mother to faint. It turns out that this "tesseract" is a scientific idea their father had been working on before he mysteriously vanished. Mrs. Whatsit promises to help the children find their father; using the tesseract, she transports them—through a series of adventures—to the distant planet of Camazotz. All the inhabitants of Camazotz are under the control of a colossal, disembodied brain known as "IT." Their father is being held captive by IT, and little Charles Wallace also falls victim to IT. Will Meg be able to save them…
